Princes of the Apocalypse

Session 1

Birds, Bears and Barbarians

Our adventure begins when the adventurers were sent by the Dwarf Gundren Rockseeker to accompany a wagon of gemstones south from Phandalin to the city of Red Larch, and also to speak with the Dwarven delegation from Mirobar, who are expected to head through Red Larch on their own journey further south. The party travelled for a tenday south on the Long Road to Red Larch, and on the way experienced some rather odd weather including icy cold winds on warm summer days, as well as tiny patches of hard rainfall. They heard rumors of even stranger weather such as lightning rising from the ground into cloudless skies.
The travellers consisted of a Stout Halfling named Jobin, once a street urchin, adopted by an elf and shown the druidic teachings. He now sets off to find a woman named Savra Ballavant and see her returned home to Phandalin to run the family business. A Lightfoot Halfling Bard named Troj Axis, quick to his crossbow, and even quicker to mock friend and foe alike. The half-elf warlock, Woned, son of Jobin’s adopted father, who has studied the teachings of the Raven Goddess and now craves nothing more than impish companionship. And finally Auron Edge, a human fighter, his former company decimated he now searches the lands for a mysterious cult of monks who set off for the Sacred Stone Monastery to find their true intentions (and also to be the most OP fighter ever).
Upon arriving in Red Larch, the adventurers grabbed a bite to eat at the Helm at Highsun tavern, feasting on Crumble Cake and ale, while their warlock companion secured free healing services at the local shrine. From there, the party headed to the more luxurious Swinging Sword Inn across the street. There, the proprietor of the establishment, a human woman named Kaylessa Irkell shared wild rumors of strange weather and increased bandit activity in the area. Kaylessa, interested in the safety of the town, offered the party 50 gold pieces and free accommodation for the night if they investigated the location known as Lance Rock.
The adventurers set off the next morning to Lance Rock and soon found themselves being circled over head by a band of Aarakocra scouts. The bird-men swooped down and surrounded the party, challenging them with mighty squawks. The party was able to deduce that while the scouts meant business, they did not mean to do immediate harm. After an offering of crumble cake by the humble bard, the scouts took off into the sky, leaving the party to their travels.
Upon arrival to Lance Rock the party discovered a mysterious engraving on a large rock out front of a cave face which read “Beware of the plague, leave now or be plagued for eternity like me – The Lord of Lance Rock.” Despite the warning, the adventurers proceeded into the cave, but only after it was scouted by a brave mouse. Inside, they discovered several recently un-deceased foes and dispatched them with fire and blade and staff. The party began to work together, as one, until they were fooled by three zombies dressed as a bear, a jester and a princess, and then proceeded to dress in their attire… for fun?
But they pressed on, the warlock unleashing massive fiery death upon his foes, as the druid continued to fruitlessly attempt to poison undead foes. When they reached the end of the cave, they discovered the Lord of Lance Rock cowering behind the tapestry raving madly “The Eye! It sees all! Do you not fear it?!” before unleashing a hail of magic missiles upon the adventurers. On his death, he turned to black flame, and his ashes were bottled and collected by the bard along with the mysterious blue orb with the purple marking of an eye.
After a peaceful night’s rest inside the cave opening, the party set off once more for Red Larch. On the way, they came upon a homestead and heard screaming. The bard raced forward into the building to discover an Uthgart barbarian attacking a woman, her husband dead in the corner, children screaming for help. When four mounted tribesmen arrived mid-fight and asked for the characters to release their tribesman for punishment by the tribe, the characters took vengeance upon each of the tribesmen for their wrong-doing. For her thanks, she awarded the party with her husband’s armor and bid the adventurers farewell. With their newly acquired, jet black mounts the party set off into the sunset towards Red Larch.
What treasure and terrors will their next adventure hold? Only the Eye knows.
